
PGT-A Results Explained: Euploid, Aneuploid, Mosaic
My PGT-A result came back euploid, aneuploid, or mosaic — what does that actually mean?
A euploid result means the biopsied cells showed the expected chromosome count; aneuploid means a missing or extra chromosome was found; mosaic means the sample showed a mix of both. None of these results directly measures mitochondrial function, implantation potential, or uterine receptivity — which is why a euploid embryo can still fail to implant, and why PGT-A is one piece of information, not a verdict.
A PGT-A result sitting in your inbox can feel like it should answer everything, and instead it often raises new questions. A euploid embryo transferred and still didn't implant. Every embryo came back abnormal. Or you're still deciding whether to test at all. Each of these deserves a real, specific answer, not a general reassurance that "it's complicated."
What PGT-A Actually Tests, and How
Preimplantation genetic testing for aneuploidy, or PGT-A, involves biopsying a small group of cells from the trophectoderm — the outer layer of a blastocyst that goes on to form the placenta, not the inner cell mass that becomes the fetus. Those cells are analyzed to estimate whether the embryo has the expected number of chromosomes.
This is a genuinely useful test, but it's worth being precise about what it actually measures: a sample of placental precursor cells, not every cell inside the embryo. It's an estimate of chromosomal status in that specific biopsy, not a direct read of the entire embryo.
Euploid, Aneuploid, and Mosaic: What Each Result Means
A euploid result means the biopsied cells showed the expected number of chromosomes — the finding associated with the lowest chromosomal-error risk among tested embryos. An aneuploid result means the sample showed a missing or extra chromosome, a common reason embryos fail to implant or pregnancies end early.
A mosaic result sits between the two: the biopsied sample showed a mixture of chromosomally normal and abnormal cells. This is a genuinely evolving area of reproductive medicine. Mosaicism is classified by how much of the sample was abnormal (low-level versus high-level) and whether the abnormality involves a whole chromosome or just part of one (segmental versus whole-chromosome), and these distinctions affect how a result is interpreted. Clinics and labs vary in how they counsel patients on mosaic-classified embryos, and this is precisely the kind of result that deserves a direct conversation with your reproductive endocrinologist and a genetic counselor — not a generic online explanation.
A Euploid Embryo Still Didn't Implant. What Does That Mean?
This is one of the hardest results to sit with, because a euploid result is supposed to be the reassuring one. Here's the honest limitation: PGT-A tells you about chromosome number in the biopsied cells. It does not directly assess mitochondrial function, implantation potential, or the health and receptivity of the uterine lining the embryo is being asked to implant into.
A chromosomally normal embryo can still face barriers unrelated to its own genetics — uterine lining development, blood flow and nervous system regulation, inflammatory or immune factors, and timing all play a role in whether implantation happens. All My Embryos Came Back Abnormal. Now What?
Receiving all-abnormal results across a cohort is devastating, and it's worth knowing this happens more than online conversations often reflect, particularly as maternal age increases — the proportion of chromosomally abnormal eggs rises with age, which is real biology, not a reflection of anything you did. It's also worth knowing that a difficult retrieval doesn't necessarily predict every future retrieval will look the same, since result patterns can vary cycle to cycle.
This is a genuine decision point best worked through directly with your RE and a genetic counselor: whether to pursue another retrieval, review the lab's biopsy and grading protocols, consider donor gametes, or explore other paths forward. We can't and won't recommend a specific direction here — that decision depends on your full clinical picture, your age, your ovarian reserve, and your own priorities, all of which your care team can weigh in a way we can't from a blog post.
Should I Even Do PGT-A?
This is worth asking honestly rather than assuming testing is automatically right for everyone. The decision generally depends on factors like maternal age, number of embryos available, prior pregnancy loss history, and whether a couple would manage a possible pregnancy differently based on the result. Some patients find the information clarifying; others find that testing adds a layer of decision-making they'd rather not navigate, especially with a limited embryo cohort where biopsy itself carries a small, real handling risk.
This is genuinely a decision to make with your reproductive endocrinologist, not something we can weigh in on for or against — PGT-A is ordered and interpreted by your RE and genetics team, and the right call depends on specifics only they have access to.
Morphology Grading Is a Different Question Than Chromosomal Status
It's worth separating two things that often get blended together. Embryo grading (morphology) describes how an embryo looks under the microscope — its cell number, symmetry, and development pace. PGT-A describes chromosomal status. These are related but distinct: a beautifully graded embryo can be aneuploid, and a more modestly graded embryo can be euploid. Neither grading nor PGT-A alone fully predicts whether a specific embryo will result in a healthy, ongoing pregnancy — both are pieces of information, not verdicts.
